Kinkan is the extensive urban settlement that covers the entirety of North Mandarin Island. The city is sometimes synonymous with the island itself and is one of the largest and most densely populated settlements in the Orange Archipelago. It is the present home of the Albright family and is Shutter's birthplace.
Overview
Kinkan City is a large densely populated megalopolis that has completely covered the island. Its city-center and its waterfronts are dotted with packed skyscrapers. Much of the population lives above the 9th Floor; only the wealthy live in detached houses. Although occasionally described as crime-infested, this level of seediness is not omnipresent in the entirety of the town. Because of its size and its overall urban density, the town has earned the moniker "The Big Orange." Despite this, the island still retains some open planted areas like large parks and underdeveloped areas such as wetlands.
Areas of Interest
- Orange Islands Cultural Center/Kinkan City Museum - plays host to a cultural exhibit and acts as a permanent home to a vandalized fragment of Lawrence III's sky castle
- Permafrost Park - a large open-air park and one of the places that has not quite recovered from the Millennium Event. As its name suggests, its ground is permanently frozen and will remain so for thousands of years. Temperate and tundra plants are raised there instead of tropical ones typical to the region.
- Port Area
- Abandoned Cable TV Station
- Wetlands
- Eevee Colony
- Oceanarium
Trivia
- "Kinkan" (kumquat) is the Japanese name for North Mandarin Island.
- Kinkan is frequently alluded to as a crime-ridden hellhole by those close to Shutter, which is in stark contrast to how the city was depicted in the animé.
- Permafrost Park is one of the few places that allude to the second movie.
