Joel is Kimberly Bond's Quagsire, and the ninth Pokemon she has acquired on her journey, as well as the fourth she acquired in the Galar region.

Personality

Joel's mind is about as blank as his face is-- but you'd be wrong to assume in a million years that that makes him dumb. In fact, Joel is among the smartest and most level-headed members of Kimberly Bond's team, and definitely is the most level-headed among her Galarian catches. Unlike most members of his species, Joel is wise and philosophical, and serves as a comforting advisor to other members of Kimberly Bond's team- and even towards Kim herself- whenever they want to work through their issues. His first scene in the roleplay involved him comforting Geddy about the death of Neil Peart. Like Kaylan, he is very patient with other Pokemon, and rarely gets angry; even when he does, it's a bit hard to take him seriously on account of him being a Quagsire, the epitome of mellow. Joel much prefers to live his life without any worry, and enjoys relaxing on Kim's bed or on the floor. Due to his relatively lax and mellow nature, he doesn't really react to things that hit him, including status conditions such as poisoning and supereffective moves. Water is no issue for him- he has Water Absorb as his ability, which he used to great effect during the Hulbury Gym Puzzle. He has a tendency to pause between words when he is deep in thought about something, and sometimes punctuates the end of his sentences with a "...hmmm?". In battle, Joel is no slouch, being Kim's resident tank. He is able to take just about any hit and deal massive damage, and given that he has two status moves at his disposal, he likes to put his opponents to sleep or poison them before dealing any damage- the latter is much more likely to happen if the opponent has supereffective moves. He has a slight Southern accent.

Kim's personality file on him reads as follows:

"NEW POKEMON CAUGHT: JOEL THE QUAGSIRE. LIKE MOST MEMBERS OF HIS SPECIES, JOEL IS EXTREMELY LAX— BUT UNLIKE MOST MEMBERS OF HIS SPECIES, HE IS VERY WISE AND PHILOSOPHICAL. HE IS BASICALLY WHAT HAPPENS WHEN [OBI-WAN KENOBI] AND [NEIL PEART]'S PERSONALITIES COME TOGETHER AND HAVE A BABY. WHICH SOUNDS VERY ODD NOW THAT I AM WRITING IT ON PAPER."

Details

  • Met: The Wild Area (though he was caught in the Rebel Treble)
  • Ability: Water Absorb
  • Favorite Move: Earthquake
  • Nature: Lax
  • Characteristic: Sturdy body
  • Ball: Poke
  • Hasslemon typing quirk: everything is in lowercase letters, with proper punctuation and grammar. all instances of the letter B are replaced 8y an 8 (a reference to the fact that there are 88 keys on a standard piano), and all instances of a dou8le o in a word (such as the words "b∞k", "l∞k", "c∞l", and so on) are replaced 8y an infinity sym8ol, representing joel's slightly philosophical nature.
A prospective Joel gijinka, as done by Goldenheart388.

Trivia

  • Joel was named after Billy Joel, due to his relatively lax personality.
  • Though Joel has not become human yet, according to Goldenheart388, his human name will be Anthony Williams, with "Anthony" deriving from the Billy Joel hit "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", and "Williams" deriving from Billy Joel.
  • Joel's chat handle is QuaggyJoel, and his Hasslemon handle, according to Goldenheart388, is introspectiveAmphibian (IA).
  • According to Goldenheart388, Joel's character theme is "An Innocent Man" by Billy Joel, his Broadway character theme is a version of the same song featured in the Billy Joel-based Broadway musical Movin' Out (making Joel the only member of Kim's team to have his regular and Broadway themes be the same song), and his headcanon voice is Jim Henson/Bill Barretta as Rowlf the Dog from the Muppets franchise.
  • Joel's verbal tic of ending some of his sentences with "...hmmm?" is a reference to the Quagsire in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, who had a tendency to do the exact same thing.
