"My friend, have you not heard of context clues?"

Charon (full name Charonus Tritonalicus III) is Leonard Braker's West Sea Gastrodon, and the seventh Pokemon he caught on his journey.

Personality

Charon, full name Charonus Tritonalicus III, is arguably the most intellectual of Leonard Braker's Pokemon team. He has a fascination for old classical novels- and by "old", he means "Greek mythology". Charon enjoys reading and studying ancient Greek mythology and mythological figures, as well as figures from other mythologies. However, he usually prefers looking at and analyzing pictures in order to get his information-- in his debut appearance, when Cuddles asked him if he was reading, he responded simply with "More accurately, I study pictures". Arguably Charon's most well-known personality aspect is that he talks almost entirely in blank verse (unrhyming) ten-syllable lines, some of which (but not all) are in perfectly stressed iambic pentameter. For instance, while "I see my name is confusing to you" is not in perfectly stressed iambic, Charon's full name, his Hasslemon handle, and the line "My friend, have you not heard of context clues?" are. This quirk carries over onto Hasslemon as well. While Charon is capable of using longer compound sentences, the caveat is that both parts of the compound sentence must be ten syllables in length as well. In fitting with his intellect, Charon usually combines his ten-syllable speech quirk with a tendency to use sesquipedalian loquaciousness (which also happens to be 10 syllables long). Due to his intellect, Charon can sometimes come off as a bit arrogant and pretentious, but he genuinely does mean well and has a good heart, mostly being polite towards other people and Pokemon. He also dislikes inadvertently hurting other people's feelings, as shown when he accidentally saddened Cuddles by politely refusing a hug, and afterwards, a cookie- his response was a concerned "did I dishearten you in any way?". However, despite his politeness, Charon also has a bit of a stubborn streak, hence his Adamant nature. Charon generally does not enjoy being hugged or patronized, and usually prefers to take things such as battles as seriously as possible. However, he is willing to relax occasionally, most notably on the beach or in his Great Ball, and appears to be relatively content where he is in life-- especially now with Leonard Braker as his Trainer and friends by his side.

Charon speaks in an upper-class RP British accent, being the second member of Braker's team after Serkis to do so. His favorite Gamecube game is Revolting Slob.

Trivia

  • Charon was named in part after the Greek ferryman of Hades who is responsible for crossing souls over the River Styx. However, he was also named after the gastropod genus Charonia, which is the gastropod genus containing the Triton snail-- the snail that gave Gastrodon its Japanese name.
  • According to Goldenheart388, Charon's Hasslemon handle is encyclopediaTritonicha (ET). Besides serving as a pun on the Encyclopedia Brittanica-- a reference to both Charon's intelligence and his British accent-- it also serves as a pun on Gastrodon's Japanese name, Tritodon, as well as the Greek god Triton, referencing Charon's love of Greek mythos. In addition, the handle is in iambic pentameter and is ten syllables long, which fits doubly well due to Charon always speaking in ten-syllable lines.
  • According to Goldenheart388, Charon's regular character theme is "Peace of Mind" by Boston (which works doubly well when one considers its chorus, where the first and last lines- "I understand about indecision" and "All I want is to have my peace of mind," respectively- are ten syllables long and can therefore be considered to be pentameter). Originally, Goldenheart388 intended to have "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac be the character theme due to almost every single line of the song being ten syllables in length, but she ultimately changed it due to the fact that the lyrics themselves did not fit Charon at all.
  • Despite his speaking quirk, Charon despises William Shakespeare and his works. However, he does acknowledge the impact that Shakespeare and his works have made on modern-day literature.
  • Charon is the first of Leonard Braker's Pokemon- and, in the case of the latter, the only character thus far that Goldenheart388 has written for- to have been caught in a ball other than a Poke Ball (Great) and to have had a full name prior to capture (Charonus Tritonalicus III).
