Boreas' Water typing offers him resistance to Fire and Steel attacks, which are a problem for the rest of Pianis' team. In addition, he can use Water moves along with his Ice ones to take out Fire types.

Pianis caught Boreas on Route 230 while swimming. At the time he was searching for a mon he could use to cross water easily, and one that could do something about his team's weakness to Fire. He found both in the Seel he caught.
