Meital, formerly Meitnerium of the New Century Class, is an escaped Schoolchild who works as a seaborne freelancer aboard her personal ship, the Kingflipper.

Appearance

Meital is a tall, pale woman of apparent [East Asian] descent with dark hair and the School-creation typical purple eyes. She's normally seen wearing light blue or teal clothing along with a seafoam green hairband, and keeps her hair in a high ponytail, save for when she's diving.

Personality

Meital can be best described as someone who wears her feelings on her normally nonexistent sleeves, and a go-getter to levels that can come off as reckless. Having spent a good portion of her life post-escape at sea, she feels uncomfortable being away from the Kingflipper or water in general for too long, and thus rarely (and often under duress) goes far from shore when on land, preferring the open oceans.

Meital also has an odd insistence on the ocean being green when most would say it's blue, despite not being colorblind.

She can be crafty despite her quirks, taking advantage of her Batchmates babying her to prevent them from prying too much into Tungsten's whereabouts.

Biography

Meital was decanted around late January as the 109th Schoolchild of the New Century Class, and was on the younger end amongst the experiments, including her fellow Superheavies. She was created by Templar Edward the Academic as an attempt at creating a transgenic Clan Anuenue Auric from first principles as part of a bet he made with his scientific rival Orlando Rosa following the errors the latter made in creating Helena. For that reason, her number was chosen due to Meitnerium being hypothesized as "eka-iridium". However, the then Meitnerium was considered a failure due to her at first glance weak power and inability to generate the proper colored Aura, her rainbow instead resembling the visible spectrum seen by someone with blue-yellow color blindness, or tritanopia. While Ed continued testing her despite this, the (poor) results remained the same. During 2006 she managed to escape the facility during Tapu Fini's attack alongside Tungsten, join up with the Seafolk, and become a traveling freelancer after obtaining her own ship, the Kingdra-themed Kingflipper.

Notable Items

  • A six-pointed star necklace with a peridot situated in the center.
  • A full-body wetsuit for deep dives.

Abilities

Meital is a Psychic capable of flipping things by looking at them while her fingers are formed into a triangle. While in the Poni facility she was mostly limited to being able to alter directions, following her escape her powers have gotten far more potent in usage and scope. She commonly uses it to alter water pressure so that she can dive down to depths that would normally require a submersible, and rise quickly without having to worry about getting decompression sickness, aka the bends. She can use it to alter water currents by flipping their direction in order to move the Kingflipper more quickly. More potent uses of Meital's power will have one pair of fingers take on a coral red hue and the other teal.

As a member of the Seafolk, she is an expert sailor capable of operating the Kingflipper by herself or with assistance from her mons.

Relationships

  • Batchmates:
    • Is a big fan of her fellow New Century Batchmate Chiyo, having kept tabs on her from at least the time of the 2022 School Raid.
    • Was treated by Rina as a younger sister due to being among the youngest of the Superheavies, something that hasn't changed even after meeting as adults, though she does find her smothering at times.
    • Has a sibling relationship with her Batch's Tungsten, the youngest of their Batch, due to often being tested together and being amongst the youngest of the New Century class. They were collectively known as the Topsy-Turvy Twins during their time there, and escaped Poni together, though they spend time apart now.
  • Met Iris at the same time she reunited with Rina and took a liking to her, giving her the pet name "skipper".

Trivia

  • Meital is a Hebrew name meaning "dewdrop". Her surname, Lau, can mean both "battle axe" and "to slaughter" in archaic Chinese, and in German is a derivative of the surname Lowe, meaning "of the lion," somewhat common amongst German Jewish families.
  • Meital's appearance is partially based on the author's earliest ideas for Chiyo, which is itself a reference to Meitnerium being hypothesized as eka-iridium.
  • Much like how Chiyo is into astronomy and Helena is into geology, Meital has a great love of oceanography.
  • As part of her tritanopia theming, none of Meital's Pokémon have blue anywhere on their bodies, including those belonging to species that otherwise would be blue, who are Shiny or have otherwise alternate colors.
