Appearance
Jean a tall and agile middle-aged man 1.83 meters tall, with pale skin and light brown graying hair. He keeps fit and looks much younger than he actually is (about 48 years old). He's usually dressed in corporate casual wear when traveling on the field and wears appropriate cycling attire over a rather extensive set of extreme sports protective gear when out biking.
Career Background
Jean worked as criminal investigator for the gendarme of Kalos since his 20s and over time earned the rank of captain, a title he is still fondly called to this day. Over time, he was eventually honorably discharged from public service. Upon retiring from the force, he became an investigative journalist for Geographic Society Kalos, where he became a regular columnist for their news and current events publication and, eventually, a senior member of the editorial board of the publication's flagship science and culture magazine, Illumis Geographe. Over time, he gained immense on-the-job experience handling multimedia productions and became one of the floor directors and producers for Geographic Society Online.
He still lends his insights and expertise to his colleagues at the gendarme and is often called onto investigations, officially on an advisory capacity.
A polyglot, Jean took several language courses back in university, a decision initially contested by his father.
Biography
Jean was born on the outskirts of Lumiose City in an old farm house owned by his family; he eventually moved to the city to begin his career in criminology and eventually married a lovely woman named Jocelyn. He would like nothing more than to settle into civilian life if it wasn't for the weirdness that continues to plague the city. In his free time, he likes to cycle. Rumors of him stopping petty thieves and making citizen arrests on his cycling routes are heavily exaggerated, so he says.
Family Life
He is the son of Gerard Martel, who has since moved in with his family. His wife, Jocelyn Joy, is a physician in general practice and a member of a rather prominent family famed for their involvement in veterinary care. His daughter Catelyn, in the meantime, is taking up her pre-med. Both of them occasionally help him write medical and health entries for the magazine. His son Armand is a member of the gendarme.
Relationships
Jean deeply cares for his family and enjoys a healthy and loving relationship with most of them. His former subordinates in the gendarme and many writers and staff within the Geographic Society--including Ivan Losken and Jonathan Halliburton, see him as a surrogate father figure and hold him in deep respect.
Personality
He maintains a consummate professional attitude in and usually keeps his (rather strong) opinions to himself. He is very protective of both his family and his community, taking any reasonable opportunity to keep his city safe. Notoriously efficient, he can make arrangements to cover live events incredibly quickly, often without him being physically present.
He is a patriotic Kalosian and is both proud of his region's culture and assortment of sweetened pastries; however, far from being ludicrously ethnocentric, he has taken the opportunity to learn about outside cultures (especially since he started working at the Geographic Society) and has become a polyglot.

Trivia
- Caoihmin's name is the Irish spelling of the name "Kevin."
- Going by appearances, Jean is loosely based on both Ant-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Mumen Rider from One Punch Man.
- By complete coincidence, Jean's surname and title references Captain Hammer from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
