Henry Kwan

Henry Kwan, Jr., JD is a lawyer, juris doctorate holder, and representative of the Best Berry intellectual property legal team.

Biography

Henry is one of a pair of fraternal twins born to [Hong Kong] business taipan Big Henry Kwan, himself of [Chinese] and Galarian descent, and his wife, a Kantonian and the heiress of a Saffron City Zaibatsu.

As the heirs of the McSweeney Kwan Group of companies, the twins were raised with platinum spoons in their mouths. However,he and his sister Priscilla couldn't be more different from both their family's expectations and from each other. While both took jobs outside the corporation to prove themselves to their father as rightful heirs to their megacorp, the paths they inevitably took were vastly divergent. Although both of them took accounting and law degrees, Henry Jr. took the bar and became a copyright lawyer for Best Berry, while Priscilla opted to practice as a certified public accountant and made little use of her legal education outside the boundaries of her field.

While his father strikes deal after deal as the angel investor for Sam Laughlin’s various vanity projects, Henry does all manner of on- and off-the-books enforcement of Best Berry’s many genetic patents, ranging from specific cultivars of plants, engineered genes and proteins, and recently, pokémon “wrongfully seized" by the authorities and "the bleeding-heart do-gooders they kowtow to."

Eventually, Henry and Priscilla would lock horns ideologically as Henry began using less-than-ethical means to acquire pokémon for himself and his company, and Priscilla would go on to become an accountant for a notable nonprofit organization opposed to his company's allegations of cruelty.

Although he currently has no real permanent address, Henry stays in various home properties in Kanto, Galar, Unova, and [Hong Kong]. He and his sister were born in the family estate in the outskirts of Saffron City. He used to date Illumina Richissime, but broke up with her after he refused to attend a charity gala the latter held for the benefit of orphaned children.

Appearance

Henry is a fit and handsome no-nonsense attorney with a stolid expression on his face. He shows emotions very rarely, often venting most of his frustrations on paper rather than in person. He is often sharply and fashionably dressed and could easily pass for a menswear model (he had worked as such briefly).

Personality and Traits

Henry grew up as a spoiled rich kid and subtly plays the part well into his adulthood. He constantly relies on surrounding himself with more competent individuals and hiring people with needed skills to see through his goals for him, something that has taken a rather dark turn as while he is good at battling, he was never fond of catching pokémon himself. Unlike his more frugal sister, Henry believes in paying good money for effective solutions and rarely worries about costs for as long as it does what is advertised, which has caused him to butt heads with a few beancounters at the Best Berry board of directors. He is willing to reward those in his employ handsomely if they do their jobs well.

He isn't as good with numbers as his sister and relies heavily on his own team of accountants to keep him in the black. What he lacks in numerical proficiency, he makes up for in navigating contracts and managing groups. Despite his rather competent skill with administrative duties, he is remarkably hands off and leaves the day-to-day items to his staff, who rarely even encounter him. His style of legal defense is described as ruthless and he is capable of undercutting an opponents case the moment he is allowed to speak on his employer's behalf.

Besides arguably his attitude toward paying employees when and where it's due, Henry does not have much of a functioning moral code and is known to occasionally seek the services of less-than-savory individuals to this end. It is said that his own collection of pokémon, with the exception of his starter, were said to be acquired by less than legal means, though nobody could ever prove it in a court of law.

Despite his stoic and almost antisocial demeanor, he does have moments of emotional mood-swinging, which is often read in the tone taken by his communiques. He does feel affection for his family and looks forward to spending time with his sister whereas he could barely contain the contempt he holds for his ex-girlfriend.

Trivia

• As an antagonist who uses his fast fortune for illicit means, the well-dressed Henry and his contempt for bean-counters and cut-rate solutions stands in stark contrast to the frumpy and frugal Priscilla, who uses her ability to save money to keep PEFE afloat and became a superhero because it was literally cheaper than filing lawsuits.
• Henry is more similar to his sister in many regards: he simply believes that purchasing expensive services that do their job are cheaper than half-baked solutions that don't work.
• He has a strong loathing for Tommy, who he thinks has a funny-looking punchable face, for having the "stolen" (confiscated/rescued) asset T-0131 in his custody.
• Although he has friendly attitudes toward Priscilla, Priscilla's own opinion of him is rather low, for understandable reasons.
• His opinions on Priscilla's partners vary:
  • He not only generally approved of Jake and Priscilla's relationship but set it up so that they would meet. Priscilla was quite happy with the arrangement and the two remained happily together until Jake's tragic death.
  • The same cannot be said for 2 of Priscilla's other ex-partners. One partner was a woman who eventually became Illumina Richissime's new partner, who he did not particularly care enough for to really get to know. The other was the nosy and intrusive Jon, who he actively dislikes.
