Penelope Grant (y Cabrera) (also known by her nickname Flash) is an artist, animation student, and a member of the illustration and management assistant staff of the Geographic Society's documentary division.

Appearance

Flash is a moderately tall, athletic, and tomboyish young woman of about 27 years. She typically dresses like a modern professional woman, with a strong preference for corporate casual, and keeps her hair in a tidy ponytail.

Biography

Flash was born in Holon City to Holonian historian Maria Remedios Cabrera and her husband archeologist Fenton Grant. She is the descendant of Raleigh Grant, a pioneering paleontologist from Galar. She spent her formative years in Holon and received her first pokémon there--a delta eevee she named Maisie. She and her family later moved to Unova in her teen years, and she took up her fine arts degree there. It was when they lived in Unova that her father gave her a rescued Elgyem, who she named Peasy. She later decided to become a professional animator and is currently taking up her degree in animation.

Her father's influential reputation helped her initially land a job as an intern and later full-time personal assistant to Hank Harvey, though her talent in art was later recognized by the magazine's top illustrators. She continues to juggle both jobs while taking up her degree.

Over the years, she had been known to develop crushes on a specific type of male, the longest of which had been for Tommy Petersen. Eventually, she would fall in love with another coworker, Gavin "Shutter" Albright; they began their relationship in 2019.

Alternate Futures

It is heavily implied that she and Shutter would marry and have a son named David.

Personality

Impeccably organized, Flash is a master of time management, being able to balance her work responsibilities and her artistic passions with precise efficiency. She is capable of working well with a variety of individuals and is one of the few workers in the office who can handle Hank Harvey's pompous egotism with grace. She has a dry and snarky sense of humor, which is contrasted with her own fondness for the cartoonish, as evidenced by her fondness for animation.

Much like her parents, she maintains a love of history and the past, which she expresses through her depictions of historical events and paleoart.

She is a skilled and passionate artist. Her skills in drawing and painting had not gone unnoticed by the Geographic Society, and she relished the opportunity to work under the tutelage of many of the organization's greatest artists. Her commitment to organization and efficiency was borne out of her desire to see through her dreams regardless of the hurdles life throws at her.

Trivia

  • She is based on Betty Brant, a recurring character in the Spider-Man franchise
    • Her relationship with Shutter is a subtle callback to the relationship between the MCU incarnation of her character and Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Ned being portrayed by Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon is paralleled by Shutter being the equivalent of an Anglo-Filipino IRP.
    • Unlike in that movie, her relationship with Shutter is destined to be long-term.
  • Her nickname is derived from the popular animation program Flash, now rebranded as Adobe Animate.
    • Incidentally, she shares a nickname with Flash Thompson, another character from the Spider-Man franchise (i.e. another character Shutter parallels).
    • Her names taken together parallel the search term keywords for Grant Gustin, the actor who played Barry Allen in the Flash.
  • Her mother's maiden name, Cabrera, and her father's first name, Fenton, is a reference to the new version of Gizmoduck in the 2010s Ducktales Remake
