Ruthenium is an escaped School experiment and the 44th Schoolchild of the New Century Class.

Appearance

Ruthenium is an [Asian] woman of average height with light brown skin and freckles, and has the School-typical purple eyes. She is most often seen wearing a black cloak embroidered with runes that mostly obscures her figure, even in tropical Alola. She prefers to keep her straight hair at chin or neck length.

Personality

Ruthenium is kind but often prefers to keep to herself out of a combination of trying to avoid the likes of Dr. No Heart's attention and personal introversion. She is also very dutiful, having created a makeshift memorial for her departed New Century Classmates and actively maintaining it.

Biography

Ruthenium was decanted in early 2001 as the 44th Schoolchild of the New Century Class. Following the escapes of first the nascent Truancy Gang and then Diamond, she managed to escape herself by following the latter's example. She then spent the next few years travelling from region to region as a truant, including Paldea, which was where she met Lily as a Glimmet.

Eventually, she felt a calling to return to the Poni facility and took the risk of returning to Alola around 2006, only to find the base completely abandoned, save for its ghosts, including Boron. Unbeknownst to Ruthenium at the time, the evacuation was due to Tapu Fini. Due to the nature of the School's abuse, many of the Schoolchildren who died there had ghosts that were unable to move on, and Ruthenium took it upon herself to free them of their torment, making her home within the facility's ruins from that day on.

Ruthenium then took on training, learning everything to know regarding dealing with spirits, and also converting to Yveltalism. Save for the spirits and when she headed over to Seafolk Village for supplies, Ruthenium spent the next 18 or so years by herself until Chiyo, Tagg, and her fellow Batchmates arrived in April 2023 searching for answers regarding the existence of the Freshman Class Iridium.

Abilities

Ruthenium is capable of taking on the empty vessel state that all Schoolchildren and Templars are decanted as in order to take on spirits into her being, and also expel them. For this reason she is often seen surrounded by hitodama, which she can command.

While not much has been seen of Ruthenium's Psychic abilities as a whole, among them is the ability to pass through solid objects from below, which she mostly uses to get herself out of the Depths. It can also be assumed that her scythe is not merely for show and that she is very skilled in its use as a weapon.

Relationships

• Ruthenium and Chiyo were friendly during their time in the Poni facility, but not particularly close. Upon meeting again the two have become friends, but the relationship still isn't quite as close as the one Chiyo has with the rest of the Truancy Gang.
• Ruthenium respects Tagg and is grateful for his help with putting many of the Poni facility's spirits to rest but isn't especially close to him.
• Is an associate of the Bargainer Statues within the Depths, bringing wayward spirits to them in exchange for various boons.

• Ruthenium is the one of the few New Century Class Schoolchildren to still go primarily by her designation instead of a proper name.
