Nautilu made his debut in the RP via Hasslemon, just like all the other mons on Owen’s team at the time save for Saura. He greeted Stipax happily, then corrected Crina about her eyes not, in fact, being her teeth (something that Crina did not seem to acknowledge). His first onscreen appearance IRP, however, was shortly after Owen met Minerva at the Techspo, and decided to introduce her to his entire team. Upon being released from his PokeBall, he comforted Teryx (who was terrified of Chopper) by reminding him that he was a Flying-type Pokémon. He then followed the rest of the Jura6 to the Devon Corp exhibit, and upon arriving there reassured Teryx’s fears that Chopper had chopped a chair in half, instead telling him that he had merely sat on and broke it. While Teryx’s fears were quickly assuaged, it didn’t take long before he noticed the stage in front of him; upon hearing Stipax questioning why Teryx would be afraid of a stage, Nautilu responded and told Stipax that schadenfreude, masochism, and sadism existed. Sure enough, his response (along with a second response that “people are monsters”) was confirmed, as Nautilu promptly witnessed Pips the Piplup getting mind-controlled by Team Lightning via a translator around his neck. Nautilu volunteered to face Team Lightning in the ensuing battle, not knowing who they were— and also seemed to delight a bit in the chaos that was ensuing. When Team Lightning ultimately revealed themselves, however, Nautilu promptly changed his mind, declining to participate in the battle due to Team Lightning’s use of Electric-type Pokémon. The ensuing battle was promptly won by Stipax.

Nautilu is Owen Edmundson's Omastar, and the second Pokemon he caught on his initial journey, as well as the first he revived from a fossil.

Appearance

In his mon form, Nautilu appears as a mostly regular Omastar, save for a pair of black square glasses that he sometimes wears. They are not Choice Specs or Wise/Black Glasses, and have no effect in battle.

In his human form (prospective name Erik Ethan Lawrence; seen below); Nautilu appears as an approximately 30-year-old man with medium-length blue hair that goes in all directions. His black square glasses have now turned round, gold, and circular, and he wears a blue undershirt with a blue (sometimes blue and white) hoodie over top of it. He also wears blue jeans and blue socks and shoes, but arguably his most defining trait as a human is his backpack, which is beige in color and resembles an Omastar's shell, complete with spikes.

Personality

Nautilu, on the surface, appears to be rather intelligent, logical, calm, and composed. Among the rest of the Jura6- and indeed, among the rest of Owen's team- he serves in essence as a sort of teacher figure to them, always willing to teach them things about the world that they might not otherwise know. Offscreen, he did this to Stipax numerous of times, constantly teaching him about things that he learned in 13th-century medieval PokeDenmark; on-screen, meanwhile, there are two relatively major examples of Nautilu doing this. The first time was when he taught everybody in the Jura6-- including Teryx himself-- about PTSD, though Stipax had heard of it before-- and in the process, made Teryx aware of the full extent of what he was going through. The second time, meanwhile, was when he took Eurypedis and Anomalo on a tour of Owen's house and taught them about numerous technological advancements that had been made since the 1600s and prehistoric times, respectively (here he also served as Anomalo's seeing-eye Omastar due to Anomalo being totally blind). He is very patient with others for the most part, especially when teaching them about things they don't know, but does tend to have a very motor-mouthed way of doing so. He is an immense lover of speeches, a trait he carried over from his original life, and will often end up infodumping about things that he finds to be important. This was most notably seen on Hasslemon when introducing himself to Anomalo; he went on a full-fledged diatribe of his backstory and an explanation that while there were such things as scientists and mathematicians in the 1300s, there wasn't much, if any, broadly-known knowledge of them, hence him deciding to teach these subjects to the populace. Ironically enough, in his youth, he hated giving speeches, albiet said speeches happened to be about subjects he did not like or believe in-- such as Arcean cults. In addition to his love of speeches, science, math, and self-diagnosing, Nautilu tends to have a bit of a cynical, pragmatic view on life. He very famously does not believe at all in the concepts of "fate" or "destiny", nor does he believe in the power of any Legendary Pokemon. He is willing to acknowledge that they exist, and have a great handle on the Pokemon world and its creation; however, he does not believe that they are in charge of a mon's life or that they can revive the dead, heal the sick, and have other Biblical qualities. He believes instead that rather than being controlled by fate or destiny, everything has just always... existed, as it were. He doesn't enjoy science because some sort of cosmic power says he has to; he just likes science because. This point is greatly touched upon in his character theme, "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads, which repeatedly uses the phrase "same as it ever was" in its lyrics and is both structured after and based on (ironically enough) a sermon.

Despite his relative patience, however, and in keeping with his slightly snarky and cynical view on life, Nautilu does tend to get a bit annoyed by things, especially things that he does not find to be realistic. He very often will snark at and correct Crina whenever she goes into one of her flights of fancy, most often if she ever says at all that her markings are her eyes and her eyes are her teeth-- to the extent that him doing so was how he was introduced in the RP. Due to this, and in a similar matter to characters such as Leonard Braker and Benny, Nautilu has a great deal of integrity, and is willing to correct anybody who he believes has a wrong or incorrect opinion. If he doesn't do this, such as to Team Lightning (who he doesn't fight against due to his knowledge of type advantages), then he will instead just sit on the sidelines and help out anybody who appears to be in immediate danger. He did this during the first battle against Team Lightning at the Techspo, and even before then kept a close eye out for Banjo when he went missing. This trait of his integrity is something that has been instilled in him since his youth, when he first longed to teach real science and real mathematics to people and Pokemon, and then flat-out left his parental figures at 11 years of age due to him getting fed up with them wanting him to be a member of their Arcean religion, notably telling them that while he's okay with someone who chooses to believe in or practice a religion, he's not okay with anyone who wants to force people to join said religion. Nautilu, like Stipax but unlike either Crina or Eurypedis, also enjoys learning new things about the world, and is often seen marveling at any new technological advancement that has been made since the 1300s. When he was revived as an Omanyte initially, he was desperate to learn everything he could about the modern world, and very quickly gained a hand of Hasslemon, modern tech, scientific theorems, YouTube, and so on. Because of this, he contrasts greatly with Crina-- who has a straight-up fear of reality and tends to double down on her insane beliefs- and Eurypedis- who is far too stubborn and antiquated in his ways to appreciate modern technology. This expanded to languages, to the point where he was one of only three mons (along with Stipax and Eurypedis) that Owen was able to understand due to him knowing how to speak some English (though according to Goldenheart388, when he was revived as an Omanyte, he spoke in Middle English and had to learn Modern English). He also, while it hasn't been seen on screen, is fluent in Danish (his mother tongue), Dutch, Kalosian, and Japanese.

Speaking of Danish, Nautilu is very much indifferent towards his heritage-- while he is big on the language, the lore, the mythos, the food, and Old Norse's contributions to the English language, he still tries to distance himself as much as possible from the fact that he is in fact from the mon equivalent of Denmark. According to Goldenheart388, he would go on a middle-name basis as a human (a la current Kendall), and in the RP he has not spoken at all about the fact that he is from the country and lived in it for 11 years before becoming a cross-country wanderer. He has also almost completely lost his Danish accent due to his desire to distance himself from his parents, who he absolutely hates (this is the in-universe WAAPT explanation for TBSkyen, his HCV, having a relative lack of accent despite being from Denmark). In terms of his general interests, he is interested in a great variety of things, but his main hobbies are history, science, mathematics, literature, art, and linguistics/languages. He has a bit of a talent for singing-- he notably was the one who not only performed "You Give Love a Bad Name" along with Gardenia's Roserade during the final battle in Eterna City (with Mark and Travis watching, no less), but who also effectively made the final battle performances a staple of all of Owen's Gym Battles going forward in the RP. Despite this, though, he generally tends towards softer or faster songs in regards to his interests-- his favorite song of all time, according to Goldenheart388, is "Fly Me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra. The only exception to this is his favorite band of all time (see below). Additionally, despite his normally cynical nature, Nautilu can easily tell when something has gone wrong with one of his close friends, and like Stipax is very introspective in this regard. Most notably, this was seen in regards to Teryx-- from the very start he theorized that Teryx was struggling with PTSD just from seeing him attack Tyrie and Rhamphor, and it wasn't until he heard of Teryx's experiences directly from his mouth that his theories about PTSD were confirmed. He was also very much horrified upon hearing Eurypedis' and Anomalo's backstories, and the latter's in particular. Additionally, he is genuinely impressed whenever a fellow mon of his, most notably Crina, displays any amount of logic. Notably, he was somewhat impressed by Crina's usage of Wii Sports logic, of all things, to correctly solve a question on The Wheel, admitting that while her logic might be faulty in some regards, it's still very much logic nonetheless.

In keeping with his rather patient demeanor, Nautilu is also very adept-- although not to the extent of Stipax or Chasmo- at comforting other people and Pokemon in the midst of their struggles. Thus far, he's only done this with Teryx, when the latter started to have a panic attack in the midst of his PTSD, and later effectively diagnosed him with said PTSD before suggesting that he go and see a professional. However, according to Goldenheart388, he has also tried to get Teryx to go to sleep multiple times (a job usually done by either Saura or Stipax), and is rather skilled in ASMR (also a trait shared with his HCV). Also, despite his rather stoic demeanor, there have been numerous moments in the RP that have shown that at multiple times Nautilu isn't as above it all as many of his friends and companions, including his own Trainer, like to think. He happily joined in on The Wheel watch party and was rather enthusiastic at certain points, and has shown very evident fear (during Teryx's attack on Tyrie and Rhamphor) and anger (during "You Give Love a Bad Name") at important moments in the RP. He would also squeal like crazy if he ever entered a museum, according to Goldenheart388, or engaged in any of his nerdy interests (he canonically enjoys DND). Despite his adoration of said nerdy interests, however, he notably isn't big on roleplaying-- he would be the DM in a DND campaign, and while he absolutely loves Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, he has absolutely zero interest in roleplaying in Hasslemon as Captain Nemo. In battle-- another one of Nautilu's many interests-- Nautilu will almost always rely on his defenses in order to get things done. He tends to very often shield himself behind a Protect or hide in his shell and use Withdraw to raise his defenses, as was seen during the Gardenia battle. While he will use Water-type moves, especially against Fire-type Pokemon, the main moves that he uses to attack are Ice-type moves, especially against any Grass-type Pokemon. Against Gardenia's Roserade, he notably dodged her Solar Beam twice over, used Hail to negate her Sunny Day, and used Blizzard to hit said Roserade for supereffective damage multiple times. That being said, though, his defensive strategies do have his weaknesses-- they end up leaving him rather vulnerable to status conditions such as poison or to Fighting-type attacks. In fact, thus far, Nautilu is the only mon on Owen Edmundson's entire team that has been seen being knocked out in a Gym Battle-- and in fact was knocked out twice over. The first time was from poison damage at the very end of "You Give Love a Bad Name", just after defeating Gardenia's Roserade; the second time was against Maylene's Infernape, who used his powerful Fighting-type attacks to take Nautilu down. Notably, it was due to this battle that Owen Edmundson decided to stock his mons up on held items and TM moves.

His favorite musical artist of all time, according to Goldenheart388, is a tie between Dream Theater and Illumise (the WAAPT equivalent of the band Volbeat), and his favorite Gamecube game is Mug Shots.

Background

Prior to being revived and captured by Owen, Nautilu's life was... somewhat odd, to say the least. For the most part, he had a relatively peaceful life, and while he didn't live for as long as Chasmo, he did live for 75 years, having the second-longest lifespan out of the Jura6 fossilmons. He was also the only member of the Jura6 to have lived during human times, namely during some point in the 13th century in the Pokemon equivalent of Scandanavia, mainly Denmark. His childhood, however, was far from peaceful, as Nautilu's Omastar parents were convinced that they were apostles of Arceus themselves and tried to indoctrinate young Nautilu into their "cult" filled with Arcean symbolism. Every day they would pray to Arceus and constantly ask Arceus for guidance and support as to how their son should live his life. This annoyed young Nautilu, who from birth was the same calm, collected, and mildly amused Pokemon that he would ultimately end up being. He didn't believe in concepts such as "fate" or "destiny", and tried his best to live his own life the way that he wanted to. For him, that life consisted of asking questions and finding out facts about the world around him. His parents, however, tried to get him to read only Arcean texts (written in Unown letters) and give speeches and sermons dedicated to singing Arceus' praises. While this did instill in him a love of speeches, he would usually speed through them as fast as possible just to get them over with, leading to his motormouthed speech patterns that he has today. After his mandatory sermons, he would secretly go off into the night and give speeches- to the same Pokemon that were there for the Arcean speeches- about novel concepts such as "history" and "physics", things that were genuinely intriguing to them. This happened for many, many years.

Slowly but surely, there started to be converts, and Nautilu's parents began to wonder what was going on. One day when Nautilu was approximately 12 years old, after an Arcean sermon, his parents followed Nautilu outside when he thought he wasn't looking and watched in horror as all of the Pokemon that had been there for religious sermons began to get genuinely intrigued by concepts such as history and physics. They confronted him about it, and Nautilu proceeded to explain to them that history and physics were things that he genuinely enjoyed researching. He told them, essentially, <you can practice whatever religion you want to, but you can't try to force people into joining said religion if they don't want to. Then it's not a religion anymore. It's a cult.> His parents were instantly shocked by this, and tried to get him to stop, but before their very eyes-- and the eyes of the Pokemon in question-- Nautilu proceeded to grab a nearby pottery wheel and evolve himself into an Omastar before leaving the scene and gaining his independence. For the rest of his life, he proceeded to learn more about the world around him, teach Pokemon things, and continued to want to discover more, all the while believing that fate and destiny were not predetermined and that nothing has ever existed for a predetermined reason. After 75 years of teaching, giving speeches, and learning all he could about the world, he ultimately died on August 12th, after being crushed underfoot by a human being in what is now Pewter City.

Many centuries later, his Helix Fossil was found and revived by Owen Edmundson, being the first of the four fossilmons revived on September 30th. Naturally, the very first thing that Nautilu did was find out literally everything he could about human history's advances since his initial death. He found out about the Internet, about Hasslemon, the changes that had been made to the region, the discovery of the Fairy type, etc. Even so, though, there were still some things he never got around to learning as well as things that he is still learning about today. Immediately, he made connections with Stipax and Chasmo, both of whom were stunned upon being told that Nautilu had lived through the 13th century, and asked him to teach them about all of the technology and historical events that had happened during that time. To that, Nautilu happily obliged, and taught them everything they needed to know about 13th century art, religion, history, etc. In return, Chasmo told Nautilu stories about his past life, allowing Nautilu to learn even more things about what life was like before his time. Owen was particularly intrigued by Nautilu, as due to him living in the 13th century, he figured that Nautilu was able to speak a bit of human language. He was, albeit only a little bit, and as such Nautilu is the only other member of the Jura6, besides Stipax, that Owen can at least somewhat understand. As such, Owen caught Nautilu fairly quickly, and shortly afterwards he began reading more books and learning more about history, physics, academia, etc.

Later on, he was used during the Kanto League, and was specifically used against Brock, Janine, Blaine, Karen, and Lance (the latter two of the Elite Four). During the battle against Blaine, he evolved once again via the pottery wheel method, and due to both the fact that he had gone through it when he was alive and due to him having tentacles, he was the quickest to form himself into his new body, to the point where even Stipax himself was surprised by how long it took.

Nautilu made his debut in the RP via Hasslemon, just like all the other mons on Owen’s team at the time save for Saura. He greeted Stipax happily, then corrected Crina about her eyes not, in fact, being her teeth (something that Crina did not seem to acknowledge). Trivia

  • Nautilu's name is derived from "nautilus", the species of mollusk that Omanyte and Omastar are based on. It could also be a reference to the fictional submarine of the same name from the Jules Verne novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, a novel that Nautilu particularly enjoys.
  • According to Goldenheart388, Nautilu's Hasslemon handle is extinctLogistics (EL). The handle serves as a reference to Nautilu's nature as a fossil Pokemon as well as his logical and pragmatic personality, but more subtly references his upbringing-- he lived during a time when logic was effectively extinct due to the lack of knowledge about science, math, physics, and so on during the medieval period in the 1300s. He shares his handle abbreviation of EL with that of Elton.
  • According to Goldenheart388, Nautilu's English character theme is "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads. According to Goldenheart388, "the song alludes to 3 things about Nautilu: his calm and level-headed personality, his love of speeches- the entire song was inspired by someone delivering a religious sermon- and his viewpoint on life and how, to him, the concepts of 'fate' and 'destiny' don't exist. Nothing exists for a reason to him, everything just... exists. 'Same as it ever was', indeed." His Japanese character theme, meanwhile, is "Cruel Angel's Thesis" by Yoko Takahashi, known as the theme to Neon Genesis Evangelion; his Broadway character theme is "For the Dreamers" from the Back to the Future musical adaptation, and his headcanon voice is that of the well-known YouTuber TBSkyen, cited as one of four YouTubers (in fact, the main YouTuber) who served as an inspiration for Nautilu's character (the other three being CGPGrey, Michael Stevens and Hank Green).
  • Nautilu shares his Ability (Shell Armor) and favorite move (Protect) with Orwell.
  • Nautilu's human name, "(Erik) Ethan Lawrence", shares its initials with that of his Hasslemon handle extinctLogistics, with both of them abbreviating to EL. This pattern applies to every member of the Jura6. He is the only human member of the Jura6 to have a middle name and the only member of the team period to go on a middle name basis as a human, done to distance himself from his Danish heritage.
  • Nautilu's revival day, September 30th, is the day on which, in 1861, the first Archeopteryx fossil was discovered; he shares his revival day with Crina, Chasmo, and Teryx. His actual birthday, October 6th, is the day that CGPGrey's first video was uploaded to YouTube.
  • Nautilu's death date, August 12th, is the day that CGPGrey's YouTube channel was launched.
  • Nautilu is the only Jura6 fossilmon to have lived during historical human times, specifically during the 13th century AD in the Pokemon equivalent of Denmark. He is subsequently also the only Jura6 fossilmon on the team to be able to speak and understand fluent English.
  • Nautilu's favorite book of all time is The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and his favorite food is the Danish food smorrebrød, which in essence is open-face bread with vegetables on it. His favorite TV show is the original Twilight Zone, and his favorite movie is Everything Everywhere All At Once.
  • Nautilu, despite living later than all the other fossilmons in his previous life, is the oldest fossilmon member of the Jura6 and the only one to have had a birthday in 2020. He is not, however, the oldest Jura6 member period; Stipax holds that honor, being 12.
